Our Fabrics

There are many fabrics we use for our hammocks, all with their own color options, durability, support, softness, and width. There is no "best fabric" for a hammock, as each fabric has it's own strengths and weaknesses. Generally, the lighter the fabric, the less durable and supportive it is, so it is up to you to determine your priorities, and what fabric suits your needs. If you have questions, reach out to us!

The majority of the hammocks we build are from either 1.2 Mtn-XL, 1.6 HyperD, or 1.7 Mtn-XL. You can’t go wrong with choosing any of these fabrics:

  • 1.6oz HyperD

1.6 HyperD is a Jack-of-all-trades fabric. It is relatively light, strong, durable, comfortable, and affordable. HyperD is available in its standard width, which allows for a hammock that is 58-60" wide. For those who need a wider hammock, HyperD-XL is available, allowing for a hammock width of ~74".

  • 1.7oz Mtn-XL

We don't play favorites, but if we did, 1.7 Mtn would be our favorite. Although more costly, and slightly heavier than 1.6 HyperD, 1.7 Mtn provides a lot more support and durability. When people ask for fabric recommendations, this is often our #1 answer. Hammocks made from 1.7 Mtn can make a hammock that is ~72" wide, which is wide enough for most everyone.

  • 1.2oz Mtn-XL

If you need your hammock to be light weight, go with 1.2 Mtn. It is wide enough to make a hammock that is 65" wide, and its is very strong for its weight. We give it a comfort rating of 225 lbs. Although it is strong for its weight, 1.2 Mtn is still an ultralight fabric, and should be used with care. Read our Ultralight Fabric Disclaimer below.

1.0 & 1.5 Monolite

This fabric is created with a unique monofilament yarn and a mesh weave. Both weights of this fabric (1.0oz and 1.5oz) are transparent and can be used as an ultralight hammock body, insect net, or both.

1.0oz MONOLITE has excellent breathability. While it provides good strength and durability for such a lightweight fabric, you do need to keep in mind that it's an ultralight fabric and requires you to treat it like one.

1.5oz MONOLITE is significantly stronger and more durable than 1.0oz MONOLITE, but it slightly less breathable.

1.7oz Mtn-XL Hyprid

The 1.7oz MTN XL Hybrid fabric is a very strong and comfortable fabric due to it's great support and lack of stretch. Due to it's strength, supportive feel, and resilience, this fabric is an excellent choice for hammock bodies.

It features a Hybrid ripstop pattern that consists of a square grid combined with a diamond grid. The base fabric is woven using a 40d yarn with much heavier 120d ripstop yarn which results in very strong, supportive, and tough fabric while still being fairly light weight.

1.7oz MTN-XL feels slightly stiff initially, but it quickly softens up after only a few uses, resulting in a nice and soft hammock.

1.8oz AIRWAVE Hybrid

The 1.8oz AIRWAVE Hybrid Ripstop Nylon fabric is made from an air textured nylon yarn that gives it a unique feel.

It has a Hybrid ripstop pattern. The base fabric is woven with a 40d yarn with a heavier 135d yarn for the ripstop grid.

It has a cottony feel to it like flannel or denim. It is more grabby than some of our other fabrics and you aren't able to slide around in your hammock quite as easily. This is a plus for some folks and a minus for others.

What Fabric is right for you?

There are many considerations in deciding what fabric to choose for your hammock.

You will need to weigh options like weight, durability, and strength of the fabric, and also consider your own weight and height to ensure that your chosen fabric is supportive enough and wide enough for your needs.

Comfort Rating

We don't use a weight rating to help you determine what fabric you should get, instead, we have developed a comfort rating. All fabrics have a different levels of support, durability, stretch, and strength, all of which will effect how comfortable you are in a hammock.

While even though our lightest fabrics would probably hold most people off the ground, many would experience a lot of stretch from fabrics that are too light for them. The comfort rating helps you determine whether the fabric is supportive enough for you. A fabric that isn't supportive enough will stretch, causing you to feel like your laying in a bowl with your shoulders squeezed together, and your spine curved, and it will be much harder to move around and shift positions.

The calculator will show you the maximum weight, but it never hurts to go with a more supportive fabric. For example, I am about 165 lbs, and I prefer 1.7 Mtn-XL (325 comfort rating) over HyperD (260 comfort rating). While I get by just fine with 1.6 HyperD, I really like the extra support I get from 1.7 Mtn-XL with only a little bit of extra weight.

I recommend prioritizing comfort over weight. I always tell people that shaving off a few ounces off their pack weight will help you walk 1 extra mile each day, but having a good nights sleep will help you hike 3 extra miles!

Ultralight Fabric Disclaimer

1.0oz MONOLITE and 1.2oz MTN XL are ultralight fabrics. Even though they offer good strength for their weight, these fabrics will not offer the same durability and long lasting service that the heavier fabrics will provide. Even if you fit within the comfort rating of a particular fabric, it may not be the right fabric for you. If in doubt, go heavier on the fabric and enjoy the added support and durability. We stand behind our workmanship 100%, but because of the limited durability of ultralight fabrics in general, we cannot provide any sort of warranty coverage for failure of these lighter weight fabrics. Please use these ultralight fabrics at your own risk.
